Raj Devarajan grew up in India with a clear interest in medicine. He entered Madras Medical College at fifteen, beginning a path that would shape the rest of his professional life. Starting medical school so early reflected both his focus and his willingness to commit to a demanding field from a young age.
Training Across Three of America's Best Universities
After graduating from medical school, Raj moved to the US and continued his training at 3 leading institutions. He completed residencies in adult psychiatry at Yale University, child psychiatry at Harvard University, and internal medicine/ gastroenterology at Tufts University.
When his fellowship at Tufts ended in 1994, he had gained experience across several areas of medicine. This background helped him understand both the physical and psychological factors that can affect patient health and shaped his approach to clinical care.
Thirty Years of Practice, One Procedure at a Time
Raj Devarajan, MD, founded Middlesex Gastroenterology, PC in 1994. Over the next 29 years, he developed one of the busiest gastroenterology practices in Massachusetts. By the time he retired from clinical medicine in 2023, he had performed more than sixty thousand endoscopic procedures.
Earlier in his career, Raj founded the ERCP program at Emerson Hospital and Nashoba Valley Medical Center. The procedure treats conditions involving the bile ducts and pancreas. Developing the program required both clinical skill and the ability to introduce a new service within a hospital system.
Raj also worked with Emerson Hospital, Newton-Wellesley Hospital, Boston Children's Hospital, and Yale New Haven Medical Center. His work across these institutions reflected his ability to contribute consistently in demanding clinical environments.
Building Institutions, Not Just a Practice
In 2005, Raj established the ASC Middlesex Endoscopy Center, LLC to provide patients with an efficient alternative to hospital-based care. He served as the facility’s President until 2023.
His leadership also extended beyond his own practice. Raj served as President of the Medical Staff at Emerson Hospital from 2015 to 2017 and as a Board member from 2015 to 2019. He also served as Past President of the Massachusetts Gastroenterology Association and the American Association of Gastroenterologists of Indian Origin.
Beyond medicine, Raj founded several companies in other sectors, reflecting an interest in identifying opportunities and building organizations outside healthcare as well.
Industry Recognitions and Accomplishments
Raj has served as a speaker for Salix Pharmaceuticals, Ironwood Pharmaceuticals, Forest Pharmaceuticals, AstraZeneca, and as a consultant for Boston Scientific and Pentax Corporation. He also served on the Medical Advisory Board of Cristcot Corporation and Allurion Corporation.
He has appeared on television programs to explain common gastrointestinal conditions in language that viewers could understand and use in everyday life.
Raj also holds a share of a patent for an HCA drug formulation that has been tested worldwide and is currently awaiting FDA approval. If approved, the drug could become an additional treatment option.
Life Beyond Medicine
Outside his professional work, Raj enjoys golf, tennis, chess, bridge, and skiing. These activities give him time away from the responsibilities and long hours that have defined his career.
Raj is a father to two adult children and considers parenthood one of the most rewarding parts of his life. He also believes in supporting others through charitable work and community involvement.
One of his contributions was to a school in India. He also volunteers at the Acton Food Pantry, supporting local community needs.

Today, Raj Devarajan works as Global Medical Monitor at Cristcot. In this role, he applies his clinical background and regulatory experience to evaluating and advancing drug development programs.
The position lets him apply the knowledge he gained throughout his medical career in a broader setting. From entering medical school at fifteen to decades of clinical practice, leadership, and pharmaceutical work, Raj’s career has remained centered on understanding complex problems and taking practical action.
